Getting over the messy middle & achieving your dreams

How are you doing on your goals this year? Hit the messy middle? Let's get over it and make achieving your dreams a reality!

Sometimes, achieving big dreams and lofty goals is like an uphill battle. And if we’re not careful, we’ll get dragged and worn out by the heavy load.

February and March have been awesome months in terms of checking off some of our big home projects and financial goals. We got our new roof, my husband replaced all of the rotten fascia and soffett, and we even got our new windows!

But of course, financial goals aren’t the only goals that we set for this year.

We both set goals for our businesses and goals for our family. The struggle for me is in fact my business. My blog has grown from being this diary of sorts to now being a source of full-time income for my family. We’ve literally gone from being a one income family to a two income household all while I’ve continued to stay home with our children.

Of course that hasn’t been easy and with taxes, it’s still proving to be a challenge but that’s how goals work – there will be challenges and unforeseens at every turn.

Let’s take us paying off our debt – back then we were a one income family because my blog was barely earning anything (in fact, I didn’t even earn enough to legally file taxes) during that time.

It was laced with bumps in the road –

  • My husband fell out of a two-story window and shattered his wrist and fractured his elbow leaving him unable to work and needing surgery and draining our emergency fund.
  • My Daddy passed away a month after discovering he had cancer.
  • We went from a family of 3 to a family of 5.
  • I had signed a freelance contract with a promise of $600 a month in income only to have them cancel the contract only a few months in.
  • My husband had to go work for a large corporation that put an enormous strain our household with him being gone all the time (he had to work the graveyard shift; he worked out of the state for months; he even worked for over 20 hours straight one day, came home slept for 3 hours and then went back to work for 15 hours!).
  • We had to deal with family drama for not being able to participate in every single function and every single “secret Santa” (honestly, I hate those secret Santa things).

But the thing is, we survived and we made it to the other side. And I won’t lie, when our emergency fund was drained after my husband’s accident I was scared. At that point, I was having to physically do everything for my husband (it was his left wrist that was broken and his right elbow that was fractured so he couldn’t use either arm).

I was trying to figure out how we were going to make it since my husband was working for a small business and they weren’t planning on paying him while he was down.

It was tough.

It was hard.

It was scary.

I cried a lot.

I got angry.

I probably screamed. (Let’s be honest – I screamed and dropped a few curse words too…#notproud)

But we did it.

And you can too.

Why am I sharing this? Because usually about this point in the year, most folks forget or abandon their New Year’s goals. Or they become so discouraged by the lack or progress or all the hiccups that they feel like they just can’t do it. And I want you to know that YES YOU CAN.

Seriously, say it with me, “YES, I CAN! YES, I WILL”.

You can achieve whatever those goals are. I know you can because we achieved a goal that honestly, when we first started I don’t think myself or my husband thought we could. Sure, it was fun to dream what it would look like to become debt-free, but it was hard to get there and sometimes the weight of it all was a little too much to bear.

So, if you are finding yourself in this spot right now – this, “I don’t know if I can go on” spot, know that yes you can. You may need to take a break for a day, take nap, or eat some chocolate to get yourself going again, but pick yourself up and keep going. Don’t stop believing in your goals. If they are truly important to you, you’ll achieve them!

Yes, I know that sounds like some corny catchphrase, but it’s true. The problem for most folks when it comes to achieving their goals is that they stop believing in them. They get bogged down by the daily ups and downs of life that they forget to keep pushing forward on their dreams. If you want this big scary thing, you’re going to have to go get it.

Opportunity does in fact knock, but it’s not going to stand on the front porch waiting all night for you decide you want to open the door. If you want this goal to happen, you have to take action.

I know I’ve mentioned this quote a million times, but it is such a good one (and is kept on my desk for this very reason) that it must be repeated often:

“Execution trumps knowledge every day of the week.” – Tony Robbins, Unshakeable

If you’ve got big scary dreams and you want to achieve them, then you’re going to have to bring the muscle with the hustle and put some pep in that step! You got this!
